Crystal was founded in Portland in 2014 by Tommy Phelan as a way to help musician friends cover their rent. It grew into a home for composers who wanted to take on ambitious briefs without giving up their point of view. Its work now covers original music, sound design and music supervision across film, advertising and entertainment. Credits range from the main trailer for Anora to campaigns for five of the eight biggest box-office openings in a single year. The work has earned numerous awards, including a Grand Clio for A24’s Problemista.

We audited the category and found every music house selling the same offer: roster, clearance and speed. Most presented it the same way, with the picture leading and the sound arriving second. Almost none showed their process, and almost none were recognisable without a logo. Meanwhile, brands were turning to artist-led agencies such as pgLang and Gilga, hiring them for their taste and proximity to culture. A music company is now chosen for who it is, as much as for what it makes.

Our opportunity was to move Crystal from supplier to curator, with an identity that balances two qualities. On one hand, the identity needed the authority of an institution: the structure and consistency that make the work credible. On the other, it needed the instinct of a collector, an unexpected playfulness that keeps Crystal a tastemaker. We expressed the first as restraint in the typography and layouts, and the second as edge in the logotype, colour and image.

The name went first. The Crystal Crckeative became Crystal. One word is more precise, and a music company has no need to announce that it is creative. The same reduction shaped the verbal identity. Four traits keep the personality consistent while the tone shifts from a pitch deck to a t-shirt: intentional, masterful, unconventional and playful.

At the centre of the identity is an audio-reactive wordmark. Its letterforms react to individual stems, the separate drum, bass and vocal parts of a track, so the music Crystal makes literally shapes the mark. It is sound made visible.

Typography is where the restraint sits. Magister was drawn by Aldo Novarese for the Nebiolo foundry in 1966 as a more elegant answer to Times New Roman. When the foundry was sold in the 1970s, the typeface was lost with it. Source Type recovered Magister from archives in Turin and Milan and rebuilt it for contemporary use. Like a rare sample brought back into circulation, Magister gives Crystal the authority of a classic.

Colour is limited to four tones. Rather than adding new colours, the system recombines these four across the grid, which keeps layouts varied without diluting recognition. Groove Red leads the palette and nods to the recording light of a live session.

Art direction follows three moments: the curators, the process and the collection. Studio portraits are always shot in side profile, which puts the ear at the centre of the frame, with headphones doing the work a wardrobe usually does. Process shows what normally stays invisible: hands on desks and sessions mid-screen. Collection goes beyond finished outputs to premieres, master files and rare physical samples.

What stays fixed is small: one grid and one typeface. That makes the system easy to maintain and hard to break. Everything else runs on rules. Colour recombines from four tones, the wordmark responds to sound and the refraction treatment works on any footage. New work enters the system and comes out sounding like Crystal.
